Black Box theatre
"A re-branding of a theatre's visual identity."

Black Box is an international theatre located in Oslo, Norway. It's one of the few programming theatres in Norway, that co-produces and presents international and Norwegian contemporary performing art. For this assignment we were tasked with redesigning the theatre's brand identity.
Out of the desire to not be "stuck in a box", I decided to explore a more expressive concept for this identity; Ink. This concept is based off the fact that the theatre vastly differs from their competitors in Oslo, by focusing more on the experimentation and transformation of performing art. The concept is also loosely based off the Norwegian pronunciation of the word Black, which sounds exactly like the Norwegian word for ink; Blekk.
The main visual element in this identity, which consists of a giant X made out of ink, can be placed differently around the canvas. It represents a large scale version of a hand drawn box, which has a spontaneous feel to it due to the ekspressive strokes of ink.
I created a design manual for this brand identity, which you can find an extract from on the bottom of the page.
